Get Back Up!

Riding a bike to an adult may seem like an effortless activity. However, the scars on my knees and elbows often remind me of the pain that I had to endure as I learned how to ride. As a child, I always wanted a bike and had no desire for a tricycle. I thought I could just hop on and cruise because everyone made it look so easy. That was far from the truth; I could barely get my foot on the pedal before tumbling over onto the concrete. The blood oozing from my fresh wounds made me want to quit, but I remember my father telling me to get back up and try again.

I find myself in a very similar situation as a born-again believer. From the outside looking in, Christianity looks easy. Starting this spiritual journey felt good when I had my training wheels on, but life removed those in no time. I tried to turn from sin, but I kept falling into temptation. I tried to read my Bible, but I kept falling into distractions. I attempted to obey God, but I kept falling into excuses. The truth is, we’re bound to fall when we operate out of legalism versus relationship. Matthew 26:40 states that the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Legalism is like concentrating on the pedals. The hardest part about riding a bike is not pedaling, the key is to look ahead and remain balanced. Christianity is not just about praying, reading your Bible, turning away from sin, and obeying God. It’s about keeping your focus on Christ and allowing His love, grace, mercy, wisdom, knowledge, discernment, and understanding to keep you balanced. The ride is becoming a lot smoother as I abide in God, incline my ear to wisdom, and listen to the Holy Spirit. I still fall, and every hit comes with pain, but God raises me back up. Proverbs 24:16 states, for the righteous fall seven times and rise again.

Donnie McClurkin has a song entitled, We Fall Down But We Get Up, and that has been my anthem for the past few months. So many things cause us to fall (sin, financial strain, failed relationships, guilt, shame, fear, and so much more). If we desire to take this ride called life with God, we must understand that he should always be our focus and learn how to depend and rely on Him in every area of our lives. God desires an intimate love relationship with you and has plans to prosper you. Don’t allow sin, shame, condemnation, fear, or failure to prevent you from getting back up. Take God’s hand (have faith), dust yourself off (forgive yourself), and move forward (repent).
